Stepping Into London: Exploring AR/VR in the Language Classroom

Hello and welcome back everyone. In this lesson, we are assigned with a new task called Exploring AR/VR in the Language Classroom.  Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) are becoming very popular in education. Simply put, VR puts you inside a digital world, while AR adds digital images to the real world. The best thing about them is that students can "travel" to new places without leaving the classroom. However, there are some disadvantages. For example, you need good internet, and buying VR glasses (like Google Cardboard) can cost money.

For our project, my group members (Adem, Ekrem, Berken, and I) created a lesson plan called "Augmented/Virtual Reality Integrated Teaching Material". Our target audience is high school prep students at the A2 level. The goal of the lesson is to take a tour of London landmarks.

We divided the tasks among the four of us. I was responsible for the second part: The British Museum. I found the 360-degree tour of the museum and wrote the questions about the Great Court and the ancient statues.

We had one big challenge. It was hard to find 360-degree videos that were slow and clear enough for A2 students. We solved this by watching many videos on YouTube until we found the right one. For tools, we used YouTube for the videos, and the students used their own mobile phones with headphones and Google Cardboard goggles. In the future, I plan to use VR often. It is a great way to make lessons fun and helps students see the culture they are learning about.
